Welcome to The Can’t Lose Letter!

Formerly known as Can’t Lose Hughes Daily-ish… as you may have noticed, daily went out the window a loooong time ago.

I started this Substack in grad school as a way to write about all the incredible things happening in the world of bowling. Once I started working with the PBA after graduation, I didn’t really have a use for this anymore.

Admittedly, I’ve been kinda stuck in a mental rut since tour season finished up. I’ve been looking for a place to direct my fleeting attention span and an outlet to vent some of these thoughts flying around in my head.

It was time for a rebrand.

What To Expect

That’s a good question.

In terms of specifics, I’m not going to write much about bowling, at least in terms of the PBA. That’s what PBA.com is for.

There is more to life than bowling, allegedly, and this will serve as my outlet to write about my other passions and interests, should they prove to exist.

In my mind, this is a ~500-word weekly column covering three to five topics. We’ll see what it becomes in reality.

My Background

For those who don’t know me personally and/or are new to the Substack, allow me to introduce myself a little.

I was born in Buffalo and mostly grew up in Raleigh. Those places represent an interesting dichotomy: Buffalo has such a rich character and local culture; Raleigh, a city filled with transplants, does not.

I bowled in college at Lincoln Memorial University… until I didn’t.

I would describe myself as your typical 190-plus, decent college player. I was probably better than I gave myself credit for — or at least had the potential to be — but I didn’t have the passion, talent or resources to pursue the sport athletically beyond college.

Instead, I went to grad school at Syracuse University to study sports journalism. Here’s the cliff notes: truly great program, not sure it was worth the price tag. I’ll circle back in five-10 years and let ya know for sure.

But SU did lead me to a pretty sick career, straight out of school, with the PBA. I manage our digital content and chip in on social. The pros call me “black cloud” because I always bring good luck. /s
